Restaurant Review: Aviary Cafe and Creperie with [Video] Recipe

Strawberry, Banana, Nutella, Gluten-Free Crepe
My prospects for a trip to Paris in the near future are non-existent, so yesterday I opted for the next best scenario in the mid-west, lunch at the Aviary Cafe and Creperie.  Upon entry, the decor gives homage to the quaint artsy-crafty detail of the French countryside. I immediately smiled as I entered, leaving the cold cloudy December day behind.

A bit too much drama? Maybe?

Roasted Red Pepper Soup

The Aviary is the perfect beginning. The employees are some of the most attentive and knowledgeable I've encountered. Our server was conscientious and eager to make our dining experience positive and gluten-free. It didn't come up, but I don't think "hold the bacon" would upset the staff.

Yes, they offer gluten-free crepes for just $2.00 extra. What a treat! The options are plentiful and next time I plan to try the Coq au Vin, but yesterday I had the Venetian Garden crepe served with a side of sauteed butter beans and kale. The crepe is a tasty faire of fresh asparagus, spinach, mushrooms, and cherry tomatoes sauteed with garlic and shallots, inside the crepe the mixture is topped with ricotta. The flavor is divine and much to my surprise the portions are man-sized. That's right guys, you won't walk away hungry. The menu includes many beef, chicken, and pork options and if you aren't in the mood for a crepe, no worries, Aviary offers a wide variety of sandwiches and salads.

I don't drink alcohol at lunch unless the occasion is extra special, nevertheless, tempted to try the Spanish Sangria, I resisted and had some excellent coffee instead. I can't wait to return on an evening with friends to share a mimosa drink board described on the menu as "A bowl of oranges, a bottle of bubbly, flutes and a juicer! For fun and for sharing, when you just want to do it yourself."  It does sound fun.

The restaurant  has an excellent website: Aviary Cafe and Creperie on the web!

YOSHI JEN GRILL & SIDES in Springfield, MO

Yoshi means good luck at Yoshi Jen it translates into good food!

Jen tells me: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese cuisines fuse in the Hawaiian Islands to emerge as Pan-Asian.

Over the last decade, the trend perfected in the major metropolitan areas landed in the Heartland. In the beginning, here in middle-America, the adaption was slow as the imitators went a little too wild with strong overpowering flavors, and unfamiliar names, but recently; we’ve all become more mature and educated. The mild fusion of delicious aroma and flavor known as Pan-Asian are some of our favorite foods in the Ozarks.

Today, many do it well, but no one blends the flavors, atmosphere, and genuine customer service better than Yoshi Jen. The sleek understated furnishings allow the feeling of sunshine to radiate from the pale yellow walls while tiny pastel metallic tiles add the reflection. The small restaurant could easily serve as a model of positive Feng-Sui. Yoshi Jen is proof positive that Asian inspired food does not require diners to eat in the dark. This establishment might be the cleanest I have had the pleasure of patronizing. Even the floor is spotless. Yoshi Jen is a happy place.

The food is delicious! I should know, it is my neighborhood spot, a place where I feel completely comfortable going alone any time of day. Dine-in, carry-out, it is consistently wonderful.

Bambu Vietnamese Cuisine in Springfield, MO

When Bambu opened its doors several years ago, it was different than it is today. Back then the server had to painstakingly explain the dishes and the ingredients to our party and quite frankly it was too laborious to be enjoyable. Often an establishment will begin to spiral into a decline, but this tortoise slowly but surely climbs.

Recently, on a few occasions I revisited the restaurant. These days the menu is more sympathetic to the average patron which allows for a more pleasant beginning to the dining experience.

The decor is charmingly gaudy. Sitting in the midst of the reoccurring bamboo theme I'm entertained by the overall appearance. The mood lighting is somewhat retro, all soft and shadowy which is okay with me, but for many it might be problematic.

Although it isn't by definition a standard use of the word, my son refers to a category of cooking as sub-Asian. For him, this includes: Vietnamese, Korean, Pan-Asian, Thai, and Indian cuisine. It separates the modern influx of distinctly different kitchens from the area's older more common Chinese meals.

Barbecue Pork with Steamed Rice
The menu is extensive with a lot of curries and soups that are visibly very popular. I love curry, but on three different occasions I ordered variations of beef steak. The beef is so delicious, it's hard to consider anything else. Reportedly, the barbecued pork is equally as succulent.

THAT LEBANESE PLACE in Springfield, MO

“Good Food- Good Mood” is the motto at That Lebanese Place and it is fitting for a restaurant that so artfully uses the pungent spices of the Middle East. A few years ago, I learned to gain focus with the scents and spices of the region through scent meditation. Now, the complicated marriage between scent and taste automatically creates a calming effect on me. Good Mood? Yes! No doubt, I’m nothing more than Pavlov’s dog. Still it’s wonderful to experience the seductive exotic blends right here at a small café in the middle of the United States.

Located in the historical business district on Commercial Street, the décor is simple, maintaining the building’s historic originality. However, the Lebanese culture is ever present through a few scattered artifacts, onscreen music, and the faint scent of fascinating spices. The simple construction of the half-circle booths is clever and charming opposite the large bar constructed of dark wood with cushioned retro bar stools that add function and a comforting feeling to the space.

Our waitress was very busy yet, delightful and helpful with our questions about the menu. The servers at any restaurant are often an undervalued intermediator between the establishment and the patrons.  In an ethnic setting that person becomes an even greater asset or liability. Especially in areas where many ethnic foods are only recently becoming available this short encounter can be a make or break moment.

Taste is complex, a combination of our physical composition and our acquired and/or learned relationship with flavors. Much like most of our relationships it can drastically change over time. If you don’t like a particular food wait a few years and try it again; you just might be surprised.

Flavors of the Middle East are pungent, even active.  Many of the spices tingle and tickle the tongue. The feeling gives new meaning to the trend known as “eating with purpose.” It can be quite enjoyable. That Lebanese Place is the perfect atmosphere and menu for purposeful eating.  The food is not overpowering, but the flavors are ever present.

We began our meal with an appetizer of stuffed grape leaves. Tightly wrapped in a pickled grape leaf is a mixture of rice and vegetables.  Pleasingly served; they are tangy and delicious reminiscent of a mild dill pickle.

My guest had marinated chicken, Lebanese pickles, and vegetables wrapped in a pita with seasoned hand-cut French fries. Unlike many pita breads, this was thin, much like a crepe.  Lightly browned, it wore an appetizing appearance. Reportedly, the pita was very good and we both enjoyed the unique flavor of the fries.

The red lentil soup was thick and seasoned with a wonderful blend of spices.  I’m guessing the recipe includes traditional Lebanese Seven Spice. We both enjoyed the undertone of nutmeg and allspice.  The meat was deliciously chewy and the beef kabobs mimicked the mild flavored spices used in the soup.  The dish came with a traditional rice that is packed with flavor, but dryer than most.

I highly recommend the restaurant and the experience and please check out their affordable prices and menu online.

1 tablespoon ground allspice

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon grated nutmeg

Mix together and store in a tight container.

THE ROOST BAR and GRILL in Springfield, MO

Margarita
It's dark. The music is rather loud. The floor is bare concrete. The front and back aligned entrances create a bit of a draft. Nevertheless, the drinks are huge, potent and the price is right and in all seriousness the food is clever, fresh and pretty darn good at The Roost.

Chicken becomes more interesting than beef and pork at The Roost. There are so many chicken choices, it's easy to overlook the burger menu. They claim their chicken is hand-cut and never frozen. I believe it

This was my second visit. The first time I ordered upon the bartender's suggestion and I did not see a menu. I ordered a bun-less jalapeno burger with waffle fries. Covered in jalapenos, I could hardly see the patty. But the beef was extraordinarily tasty. Even though, I know that suggests it was somewhat fatty, it was worth it.

This time I studied the entire menu. Bread eaters will love The Pick'in'Chickin section of the menu with eleven different chicken selections to enjoy as a wrap or a sandwich, grilled or fried and served with a side for a modest price. What a deal!

Primas Mexican Grill; Glenstone in Springfield, MO with [Video] Recipe

There are a lot of Mexican restaurants and most of them are good so, today after having lunch at Primas with my son I ask myself; why do I return so often? It's the differences that keep me returning.

The spacious free-standing building is open and uncluttered with a minimalist modern Hispanic inspired decor. It's beautiful, but more importantly the design eliminates annoying background noise that interferes with good food and good conversation. As a social eater, I enjoy this aspect of any restaurant and poor acoustics has kept me away from many fine restaurants.
